SOUND ASSERTIONS

Sound Assertions: 3 Jazz Pioneers is a poster series that unifies three different musical composers, Ferdinand "Jelly Roll" Morton, Mary Lou Williams, and Charlie "Bird" Parker. The three posters persuade viewers to attend the series of events held to honor these three musical innovators. The incorporation of typography and image were used to show their musical recognition to the art form, as well as the timelessness of the artists.

POSTER ANIMATION

Pulling the poster series into a digital form serves to function as a way of promoting the event to a younger audience. This animation could be found across all platforms of social media, so the target was to create a short video that would draw attention and desire to the event. Keeping this in mind, I played off of the bright colors of the series to make it pop. To further capture the attention of the audience I emphasized the rhythm produced by jazz music with the portrayal of the instruments being played, as well as through the transitional spaces.

Sketches

When sketching out designs, I wanted to capture the legacy each musician left behind for future generations. What united the three musicians was their musical innovation for the mid to late 1900s. While each possessing a different skill set, they all left behind a legacy through their musical talents towards the jazz culture. Music made up who they were and what they were remembered for, so instead of capturing their likeliness, I wanted to capture each musician through their hands playing the instrument they were known for.
